Community Safety Tips

  • Electric Bike (E-Bike) & Traffic Laws: With the rise of e-bikes, the GLPD actively enforces NYS regulations. Riders must be 16 or older and are prohibited from riding on sidewalks or in public parks. Bikes can only be used on highways with a posted speed limit of \(30 \text\) or less, and anyone under 14 must wear a helmet. Electric motorcycles are not legal on public roads.
  • Boating Safety: Due to mandatory NYS regulations, operators of vessels must hold a Boating Safety Certificate. The GLPD hosts certification courses locally—call the station to get on the waitlist for the next session.
  • Home Security: Protect your property by ensuring all doors and windows are locked, particularly when heading out of town. Keep spare keys with trusted neighbors, not under doormats, and use timers on indoor/outdoor lights to deter would-be intruders.
  • Seasonal & Bear Safety: The GLPD issues safety guidelines for the changing seasons, including bear conflict avoidance to prevent attracting wildlife, and strict trick-or-treating rules for Halloween (e.g., adult escorts and reflective gear)
The New York State Police is asking everyone to pitch in and report suspicious activity, which can include:
  • Someone trying to access restricted or secure areas
  • Unattended bags or packages in public places
  • Individuals acting in a way that seems unusual or out of place
  • Vehicles circling an area repeatedly or parked in unusual locations
You don't have to be certain that something is wrong—if it feels suspicious, it's worth reporting. Your call could help prevent a crime or protect someone in danger.
