Ice Safety Reminders

Ice Safety❄️ ICE SAFETY REMINDER ❄️

ATTENTION RESIDENTS AND VISITORS

As winter settles in and our local ponds and lakes begin to freeze, it’s the perfect time to enjoy the beauty and fun of outdoor activities like ice skating, fishing, walking, and even cross-country skiing. However, ice safety must always come first to ensure that an enjoyable day doesn’t turn into a tragedy.
While it’s rare for Greenwood Lake to completely freeze over, the colder temps might make it possible soon. But remember—ice thickness can vary greatly depending on factors like inlets, outlets, and water currents. Even if one spot looks safe, no ice is guaranteed to be safe.
If you choose to go out on the ice, please follow these guidelines for safety:
✅ Always check ice thickness before venturing out:
2 inches or less: Stay off! Too thin for any activity.
4 inches: Safe for walking, skating, and fishing.
5-7 inches: Safe for snowmobiles and ATVs.
8-12 inches: Safe for small cars or trucks (not recommended!).
✅ Never go alone. Always have a buddy nearby who can assist in case of an emergency.
✅ Carry safety gear: ice picks, rope, and a whistle can save lives.
✅ Avoid areas with visible cracks, open water, or snow-covered ice that could be masking thin spots.
Public Safety Reminder:
If you venture out on the ice irresponsibly, you’re not only risking your own life but also the lives of first responders who may have to attempt a rescue. Please make safe decisions and plan ahead.
A Special Note for Ice Fishers and Skaters:
🎣 Ice fishers, please avoid drilling holes in areas where people are skating to prevent injuries, especially to children and new skaters.
🚶Solo treks can be dangerous—accidents happen when you least expect them. Always let someone know where you’re going and when you’ll return.
⛸Let’s make this a fun and safe winter for everyone. Enjoy the beauty of Greenwood Lake, but use common sense and caution.
🚨 REMEMBER: The vehicles depicted in weight-bearing charts are only for guidance—driving on the ice is NOT recommended!
Stay safe, and let’s all look out for one another this season! ❄️
